J.W. Lewin Exhibition

29 February 2012

John William Lewin (1770-1819) was the first free professional artist to settle in Australia. Arriving in NSW in 1800 from London, Lewin's mission was to collect, draw and publish Australia's natural history for European audiences. Early next month the Mitchell Library will host a magnificent exhibition on the art of John William Lewin called Lewin: Wild Art. It will be held in the Exhibition Galleries of the State Library of New South Wales from 5 March 2012 to the 27 May 2012. I strongly urge anyone with an interest in Australian natural history to pay a visit. The exhibition has been curated by Richard Neville of the Mitchell Library and his book Mr J.W. Lewin, painter and naturalist will be available early March.
